The Roberts-Rolfe Open Singles

Commencing on Sunday 5th July - Final Friday 10th July 2009

The 82nd Running of The Roberts-Rolfe Open Singles

Played on the International standard greens of the historic Parc Howard, Llanelli

South Wales Championship Cup

Continuous  play on Sunday, evenings through the week.

For a first prize of £600 and the magnificent South Wales Championship Cup.

Sponsored by Carmarthenshire County Council, who intend restoring this competition to its rightful place at the pinnacle of South West Wales singles bowls tournaments.

The event was inaugurated in 1926, was originally known as the South Wales Bowls Championship, and was directly responsible for the forming of the Carmarthen County Bowling Association.  The impressive trophy, one of the finest competed for in any bowls singles event, was jointly financed by Alderman Joseph Roberts and Mr. Joseph Rolfe and cost 50 Guineas, a very substantial sum in those days.

The first running of the event saw W.H.Griffiths of Llanelli defeat Fred Reed of Swansea 21-14 for a winner’s prize of £10, and the final was watched by some 2000 spectators.

In 2008 Tyrone Bendle of Loughor took away £600, in front of a somewhat smaller attendance!
